X (formerly Twitter) - statistics & facts
Old habits die hard, especially for users of X. Following the full migration of Twitter to X, users are slow to adopt the platform's new name, and posts are still referred to as Tweets, as the little blue bird logo continues to hold its place in pop culture. However, the microblogging platform remains popular, with hundreds of millions of users worldwide, and audiences are still loyal to the platform formerly known as Twitter.
From Twitter to X Corp.
In April 2022, businessman and entrepreneur Elon Musk announced his plans to acquire the publicly listed company and completed the transaction in October 2022. In April 2023, Twitter became X Corp., following Musk's decision to merge Twitter with X Holdings, with the service being referred to as simply X. Since the new ownership, the company has undergone many changes and is no longer publicly traded. X's estimated revenue fell to around 2.5 billion U.S. dollars in 2024, a sharp drop from its 2021 peak. Most income still stems from advertising, with global ad revenue estimated at roughly 1.8 billion U.S. dollars in 2025.
Second in U.S. visits, far from the top in users
As of October 2025, the United States remained X's largest market with roughly 99 million users, followed by Japan. Although the platform is popular and well known, its audience size doesn't compare with social media giants like Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp, and Instagram, all of which surpass two billion monthly active users. In terms of social media website visits in the United States, X ranked second after Facebook as of March 2026.
A go-to source for breaking news
The microblogging style of X makes it easy for users to engage in live conversations and keep up with the latest happenings via a feed. A 2025 study found that 57 percent of regular X users used the platform to access news, outpacing most competing platforms. According to a global survey, around 48 percent of X users paid attention to traditional news media on the service, with an equal share following creators and personalities. Average weekly posts on X rose to over 17 per account in 2025, reflecting steady engagement.
Content moderation remains a pressing concern, as abuse and harassment accounted for the largest share of user reports in the second half of 2024. As X works to balance free expression with user safety, its ability to navigate these challenges will shape the platform's future trajectory.
