Google's Ambition-based emissions excludes pollution from certain Scope 3 categories that it considers out of its control or “peripheral” to its core operations. These include Category 1: Purchased goods and services exclusions and Category 2: Capital goods exclusions.

Google’s emissions surge

In 2025, Google’s “ambition-based” GHG emissions increased by around 80 percent compared with 2019, the base year for the company’s net-zero target. This rise has been largely driven by growing energy demand in Google’s data centers, fueled in part by the rapid expansion of its artificial intelligence (AI) services. AI workloads require substantial computational power and data storage capacity, both of which are energy-intensive.

Google’s climate targets at risk

Google aims to achieve net-zero emissions across its operations and value chain by 2030, including a 50 percent reduction in Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions from 2019 levels. However, with emissions currently trending upward and energy demand from AI expected to increase further, meeting these targets remains challenging. To address this, Google is increasingly focusing on measures such as procuring high-quality carbon removal credits.
