The volume of electricity generated across India between April 2024 and March 2025 was over billion units. The largest share came from thermal power, at around ** percent of the total electricity generation in the country.

India’s power consumption

As electricity production, electricity consumption in India has grown steadily over the past decades. The industrial sector accounted for the largest share of the total power consumption in the country, followed by the domestic and agricultural sectors.

Electricity sources

Despite the global urgency to shift to green energy sources, India’s power sector mainly relies on fossil fuels. In 2023, coal electricity generation increased by over 100 terawatt-hours compared to 2021. That same year, the country’s investments in renewable energy amounted to **** billion U.S. dollars.
