The MDAX (derived from Mid-Cap DAX) was introduced in January 1996 and comprises 50 companies from traditional industries that follow the DAX-listed securities in market capitalization and trading volume. The index therefore reflects the price development of shares of medium-sized German companies or companies primarily active in Germany (mid caps). It is calculated both as a performance index and as a price index. The chart shown depicts the performance index.
