The annual average prices for premium gasoline (95 octane, E5) in Germany rose sharply from 1972 to 2026. In 2026 (as of June), the average price for one liter of premium gasoline was 195,4 cents. The chart shows the development of gasoline prices from 1972 to 2026.

Gasoline price in Germany

By international comparison, Germany is among the countries with the highest gasoline prices. Currently, about half of the fuel price consists of taxes and levies such as value-added tax, the eco-tax, and the oil stockpiling levy.

Long-term gasoline price trend

Since 1972, the price for one liter of premium gasoline in Germany has more than quintupled overall. The effects of the second oil crisis from 1979 are visible as a marked price increase, before gasoline prices eased slightly from 1986. From 1990 onward, the average price for premium gasoline in Germany has trended upward over the long term. Rising crude oil prices since 2021 and the outbreak of the Ukraine war in 2022 have pushed the average gasoline price in Germany sharply higher recently. The gasoline price is also considered a barometer for consumer sentiment in Germany. High fuel prices strain consumers, leaving less money available for other consumer spending.
