China is the largest operational emissions trading market in the world. The country's ETS launched in July 2021, and as of 2024 covered around billion metric tons of carbon dioxide (GtCOâ‚‚). This accounted for just over 40 percent of China's annual COâ‚‚ emissions that year. Meanwhile. the European Union ETS, which became the world's first ETS in 2005, covered around *** GtCOâ‚‚e as of 2026.
