Due to the surge in freight rates, container carriers reported record profits in 2021 and 2022, before recording losses in 2023 and slightly rebounding in 2024. Maersk made, on average, an EBIT of ****U.S. dollars per TEU transported in 2024, higher than some ** U.S. dollars per TEU a year before. ZIM reported the highest EBIT/TEU in 2024, amounting to over ****U.S. dollars per TEU. The global container shipping industry made a profit of around 60 billion U.S. dollars in 2024.
