BYD Company Ltd. (BYD Group), known by its acronym "Build Your Dreams," was founded by Wang Chuanfu in 1995 in Shenzhen, China as a privately held manufacturing company. Today, BYD is not only a leading producer of rechargeable batteries but also of automobile and cell phone components. As a pioneer in sustainable development, BYD delivers renewable energy solutions worldwide, with over 35,000 cumulative patents granted by the end of 2024. Concurrently, BYD's revenues have been growing significantly, surging to more than 777 billion yuan in 2024. This marks a healthy return on investment from the 54 billion yuan in R&D spending that year.
From battery maker to global EV leader
The growing global demand for new energy vehicles (NEVs) has fueled BYD's thriving vehicle manufacturing business. In 2025, BYD claimed the top spot among global plug-in EV manufacturers with a market share of about 22 percent. As the leading NEV brand in China with approximately 3.5 million vehicles sold domestically that year, BYD's dominance at home remains unmatched. In 2024, the company's new energy vehicle sales revenue exceeded 533 billion yuan. The drivers of such outstanding sales performance include BYD's proprietary technologies, namely the "DM-i Super Hybrid," "Blade Battery," and the "e Platform 3.0". As the BYD Group continues to consolidate its position in the domestic NEV market, its overseas business is also expanding rapidly, with the company launching its passenger NEVs in Norway in 2021 as its first step into Europe.
Sedans and SUVs powering BYD's product lineup
BYD's NEV sales growth is primarily attributed to its passenger vehicle products. The company's lineup spans two main series: the "Dynasty" series ("Qin," "Han," "Tang," "Song," and "Yuan") and the "Ocean" series ("Dolphin," "Seagull," "Seal," and others). Both series include pure-electric and plug-in hybrid models covering sedans, SUVs, and MPVs. In 2024, sedans accounted for about 2.36 million of BYD's passenger vehicle sales, while SUVs reached roughly 1.79 million units. On the global stage, the BYD Song ranked among the best-selling electric vehicle models worldwide in 2025, with close to 590,000 units delivered. With overseas markets now accounting for nearly 29 percent of total revenue, BYD's international footprint is growing as fast as its product range.
