Aluminum industry worldwide - statistics & facts
Aluminum is one of the world’s most widely used industrial metals, valued for its light weight, corrosion resistance, and versatility across construction, transportation, and packaging. Global primary aluminum production reached 73,009 thousand metric tons in 2024, more than triple the output recorded at the start of the century. Global aluminum demand stood at 71.4 million metric tons that same year, a 2.1 percent gain year-over-year. China alone accounted for 59 percent of primary aluminum demand worldwide, a share large enough to mean that decisions made in Beijing ripple through global production capacity and pricing alike.
China and a Handful of Global Players Dominate Production
The largest aluminum producing companies in 2025 were led by Chinalco at 8.1 million metric tons, followed by China’s Hongqiao Group at 6.6 million metric tons. Russia’s Rusal ranked fourth at 3.9 million metric tons; Rio Tinto of the United Kingdom and Australia produced 3.4 million metric tons. The corporate concentration mirrors the geographic one: China’s smelter aluminum output by country surpassed all other nations in 2025, with India and Russia ranking second and third. Tariffs, Geopolitics, and a Surging Price Environment
China’s manufacturing scale translates directly into export dominance. The country led all aluminum exporting nations in 2025 at 40 billion U.S. dollars, more than double Germany’s 20 billion U.S. dollars in second place. The United States, which led global aluminum importing nations at 26 billion U.S. dollars in 2025, imposed 25 percent tariffs on all aluminum imports in March 2025, a measure subsequently escalated and reinforced in 2026. Global aluminum prices by quarter climbed to 3,562 U.S. dollars per metric ton in the second quarter of 2026, up from 2,446 U.S. dollars in the second quarter of 2025. The Iran war that began in February 2026 introduced additional supply-side uncertainty into a market already reshaped by escalating U.S. trade policy.
Recycling Scales, But Electrolysis Emissions Remain the Industry’s Central Challenge
Electrolysis generated 788 million metric tons of COâ‚‚ equivalent in 2024, making it by far the largest emissions source across all aluminum sector production processes. Recycling produced just 25 million metric tons, a fraction of that total. On recycled aluminum ingot production, China led in 2024 at 16,611 metric kilotons, with North America at 5,716 metric kilotons and Europe at 5,635 metric kilotons. The gap between what recycling achieves and what electrolysis still emits is not a transition in progress. Regulatory and investor pressure is building, and producers that fail to expand secondary aluminum capacity will find themselves on the wrong side of decarbonization demands that are already tightening.
