Social media and artificial intelligence (AI) - statistics & facts
Nearly six billion people use social media worldwide, and the AI market is valued at about 244 billion dollars. These two digital giants will surely continue to merge.
Social media marketing made easier
Generative AI is poised to realize its full potential among content creators and social media marketers. In 2025, global markets ranked generative AI as the leading consumer trend. People working in this sector cite content creation and enhancement as the area with which they use generative AI the most, followed by email marketing, social media management, and ad targeting. Additionally, almost 40 percent of marketing professionals intended to continue to use AI for influencer marketing. In 2024, a global survey found that more than 60 percent of marketers, PR professionals, salespeople, and customer service reps thought that labeling AI-generated content would help their overall social media performance. Furthermore, 30 percent of respondents reported that they constantly labeled AI-generated content on social media.
How much do we trust generative AI?
Social media users are skeptical of the technology, despite its widespread and increasing use. In 2025, there are approximately 346 million users of Generative AI tools. Attitudes toward the usage of AI on social media varies by generation. Overall, one in five Generation Z users reported that they would be less likely to trust something on social media if it was written by AI. The result was similar for millennials. Trust in this type of social media content was lower for Generation X and Baby boomers. The main concerns that organizations had with the integration of Gen AI included potential mistakes leading to real-world consequences, not achieving its expected value, and the lack of availability to high quality data.
User concerns involve deep-fakes and misinformation
Social media users are especially concerned about deep-fakes and misinformation. According to a survey conducted in March 2025 in the United States, 60 percent of users said they were concerned about the spread of misleading AI video and audio deepfakes. Additionally concerns around the topic included worries about personal data privacy, misuse by foreign powers against U.S. interests, the spread of misinformation. Similarly, in the United Kingdom, 67 percent of adults felt that AI-generated content contributed to the spread of misinformation on online platforms.AI has the potential to enhance the productivity of influencers, marketers, and business owners. However, social media users are concerned about the potential adverse consequences of this technology, despite its offers of personalized newsfeeds and entertainment. Even so, the huge popularity of AI-generated content and the money that can be made from using generative AI make the combination of these technologies with social media an undeniable and possibly unstoppable double-edged sword.
