The total number of employees working in hospitals and facilities of the national health service (Servizio Sanitario Nazionale - SSN, in Italian) in Italy decreased significantly from 2001 to 2018. The national system counted nearly *** thousand employees (including physicians, medical staff, and other staff) in 2001, and decreased in following years reaching thousand in 2018. However, this figure grew the following years and in 2022 almost employees were working in hospitals and facilities of the SSN.
