In 2025, national jurisdictions still prohibit private and consensual homosexual relations between men. Of these, also punish lesbian acts. The severity of the sentences ranges widely from less than year in prison to life imprisonment. Additionally, this crime can be punished by the death penalty in countries (Mauritania, Nigeria, Somalia, Afghanistan, Brunei, Iran, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Uganda, and Yemen).
Victims of Hate
Criminalization is not the only reason to hide sexual orientation. Choosing certain streets, showing certain displays of affection, or choosing the wrong vacation destination can pose a serious risk to one’s own safety even in countries considered gay friendly. For example, although the United Kingdom is considered one of the safest destinations for LGBTIQ+ tourists, it recorded hate crimes against this community within its borders in 2021 alone.
Promoting Integration
Fortunately, more and more people are standing on the side of this minority. The media and advertising are an important springboard that promotes the visibility of the LGBTIQ+ universe. However, the stereotyped characters or behaviors shown leave a large part of the community dissatisfied. In fact, percent of participants in a study conducted by Nielsen in 2022 demand more authentic representations and percent greater inclusivity in ads and advertising.
