Hamas' attack on October 7. 2023, left  1,195 people dead in Israel and 251 taken hostage. By January 26, 2026, the remains of the last Israeli hostage were recovered and returned to Israel for burial. No Israelis remain captive in Gaza from that point. Over the course of the war, a total of  168 hostages were recovered alive, while 87 were retrieved already deceased.
