SMRs promise energy security
SMRs are small, prefabricated nuclear fission reactors that offer greater flexibility and versatility compared to traditional nuclear power plants. SMRs can be used to power energy-intensive facilities such as data centers and manufacturing plants, and are therefore posed as a low-carbon means of meeting the surging demand for energy across the globe. As the AI revolution drives a global surge in data center demand, major tech firms such as Google and Amazon are investing heavily in SMR development to secure reliable, off-grid energy supply for their facilities.
Big tech looks to existing nuclear plants
While SMRs present an attractive long-term solution, proponents are facing significant technical and regulatory hurdles. In the short to medium term, tech companies are turning to existing nuclear infrastructure. In September 2024, Microsoft signed a landmark deal with Constellation Energy to restart the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania by 2027. Similarly, in June 2025, Meta entered into a separate agreement with Constellation to purchase power from a nuclear facility in Illinois. These deals will no doubt test public sentiment surrounding nuclear energy as a viable clean energy solution for the future.
