The employment rate among Hungarians between 15 and 64 years old has followed an increasing trend, except for a slight decrease in 2020 due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. In 2024, the employment rate in the country peaked at over 75 percent.
Employment opportunities
As of October 2024, approximately 118,000 women and 108,000 men were registered job seekers in Hungary. The highest number of Hungarians were employed in the manufacturing industry, measuring at almost 712,000, while a further 411,000 employees were active in wholesale and retail trade in 2022.Â
Working conditions
In 2023, Hungarians worked on average 39.38 hours at their main job each week, which marked a slight increase compared to the figures recorded in the previous years. As of 2024, Budapest recorded the highest number of individuals who worked from home occasionally or regularly, measuring at approximately 198,000 people. This figure was significantly higher than the values recorded in other regions of the country.
